Questions I get asked as a live portrait illustrator
Before an event
If you’re looking to book an artist to create live portraits at an event, you might have a few questions about the process. These are some of the things I’m asked the most, but if you ever have any other burning questions then I’m always happy to answer!
How many live portraits can you draw during an event? How long does each portrait take?
I can draw 6-10 portraits per hour, depending on if you’d like full colour or a limited colour line drawing. My limited colour drawings just take five minutes per person, so are a great option if you’d know that it’s going to be a busy event. I enjoy working quickly, and know people can get a little uncomfortable sitting still for too long, so my quick way of working means my portraits feel spontaneous, with the bonus of getting through lots of guests!
How much does it cost to book a live portrait illustrator?
It depends, this will depend on the level of experience and location of the portrait artist. Personally, my prices start at £150 per hour, with a minimum booking of two hours for London events, or three hours outside for events outside of London. My pricing varies based on the type of event and whether it’s daytime, evening or weekend.
To book, I ask for a 50% deposit to secure the event. The remainder will be payable within 30 days of the event.
What equipment or set up do you need? How much space?
Nothing crazy! I need a chair for myself and for the sitter, and a good height table to draw at. (Think dining table rather than coffee table!) Alternatively I can draw on an easel if you’d like to provide one.
I can bring my own plain paper - I work on A5 paper and this can be white or your choice of colour. Alternatively, if you’d like branded paper you’re welcome to provide it.
I bring all my drawing materials, a drawing board, and a sign to let people know about the portraits. I can also bring a wireless lamp incase lighting isn’t perfect.
During the event
The fun bit! These are the questions that guests tend to ask me whilst I’m sketching them. These are often starting points that lead to lovely chats about art and life and the event! I won’t put my answers here - you can have your portrait drawn by me to find out!
